World University Games: Two medals for German judoka

The judoka Samira Bock and Agatha Schmidt brought the German team its first medal wins.

Judoka Samira Bock and Agatha Schmidt gave the German team its first medal wins on the first weekend of the World University Games in Chengdu, China. Bock (IU Internationale HS/up to 70 kg) took silver on Sunday, Schmidt (Uni zu Köln/up to 63 kg) bronze.

“I didn’t go into the competition expecting to be able to fight for the medals because the level here is so high,” said Bock (20). In the final against Japan’s Mayu Honda she “unfortunately slept a bit”.

Schmidt (26) made it to the bronze medal match via the hope round and was happy after winning the medal. “To take part in such a big event is a great reward for the hard work I put in for years. I am happy about my achievement and very proud of myself.”

The German University Athletic Association is competing with a record contingent. The 160-strong team will be accompanied by 76 officials. Athletes aged 18 to 27 are eligible to compete in Chengdu. A total of around 10,000 participants from around 150 countries will be taking part.
