Work victory against Celta Vigo: Barça go into the Clasico as leaders

FC Barcelona are still first in La Liga. But the Catalans also needed some luck after a strong start against Celta Vigo

It was a matter of time based on the way the game went in half one, the lead for Barcelona at that point highly deserved: Pedri slid in from close range after a mistake in Celta Vigo’s backline. However, the victory against Celta Vigo was far from being as secure as was believed at the start.

Marchesin first often on the spot

At least the 1:0 should remain the only goal of the evening. And this despite the fact that Barça had already had numerous chances before the decisive 17th minute. Neither Raphinha (10th) nor Ferran Torres (13th) were able to get past Marchesin with a shot from distance.

After the strong opening phase, the flood of chances for the Catalans was over. They deservedly led at the break, but the 1:0 crumbled after the change of ends. Celta Vigo’s Oscar (47th) missed miserably and ter Stegen made strong saves from Gabri Veiga (56th) and Iago Aspas (84th).

Luck at the post shortly before the end

Not much more was to happen in the penalty areas for a long time, Barça acted negligently while Vigo gave everything. In injury time, things got really dicey: Garcia just barely deflected Iago Aspas’ shot against the post (90.+3) and ter Stegen saved from Perez (90.+6).

Xavi’s side ultimately won somewhat happily after losing 1-0 at Inter Milan, their second defeat in their third game in this year’s Champions League group stage, and defended their top spot in La Liga.

An important win ahead of the second leg against the Nerazzurri on Wednesday (9pm) and the Clasico against runners-up Real Madrid on Sunday (4.15pm).
