With a lot of luck: Mbappé shoots PSG into the final

Paris St. Germain have reached the final of the Coupe de France. The capital club dominated the game against Rennes, but only won it thanks to a lucky goal from Mbappé, who missed a penalty shortly beforehand

PSG got off to the expected dominant start, but the home side only posed a threat in phases. Nevertheless, the aluminum shook in the early stages: Mbappé’s shot was deflected onto the crossbar by Mandanda (12′).

On the counter-attack, Donnarumma made a good save from Kalimuendo (12′), but otherwise Rennes produced very little. As Paris were also short of ideas, nothing happened for a long time – Dembelé’s incomplete move was in keeping with the French champions’ attacking play (26′)

Mbappé overcomes Mandanda at the third attempt

With plenty of luck, the favorites went into the break with a lead: After Mbappé had failed to beat Mandanda from the penalty spot (37′), a deflected shot from the top striker landed in the net unstoppable for the keeper (40′). Omari was the unlucky man for Rennes in both scenes.

After the break, the visitors became bolder, with Gouiri narrowly missing the target from distance (50′). PSG remained just as dangerous, but Mbappé failed – once again – to beat Mandanda (52′, 59′).

Rennes harmless – PSG desperate for Mandanda

On the whole, little happened in the second half, Rennes improved but hardly created any danger. Kalimuendo headed onto the roof of the net from close range (67′). Both teams remained harmless until the end, with Mandanda making one last save from Asensio (79′), but there was little more to report. PSG will now face Olympique Lyon, who beat second-division side Valenciennes 3-0, in the Coupe de France final.

First, however, the French champions will continue their league campaign on Saturday at 9pm against Ligue 1 bottom side Clermont Foot before hosting FC Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Parc des Princes next Wednesday (also 9pm).
