Widmer’s dream goal brings satisfaction to Mainz

Scoring goals is not necessarily one of right-back Silvan Widmer’s core tasks at Mainz 05, but his stupendous shot to make it 1-1 against Gladbachhas what it takes to become a goal for the ages.

“It was my first Bundesliga goal and the first goal for Mainz, it will stay in my memory for a long time. Especially as it was the most beautiful goal I have scored so far,” Widmer said. In the 76th minute, the 28-year-old got the better of his Swiss national team colleague Yann Sommer with a left-footed shot into the far corner, where the ball bounced over the line from the corner of the cross.

“He hasn’t done that in training yet, but I had every confidence in him. I think he was surprised himself that he hit the ball like that. It was a beautiful goal,” enthused Robin Zentner. After the mistake by the 05 keeper in the 38th minute, Mainz were trailing, but until Widmer’s artistic shot, the home side were unable to score despite their great dominance.

“I wanted the shot exactly like that, but of course it’s cool, after all it’s not every time that it hits up there. That’s why it perhaps looked a bit like I was surprised,” Widmer recounted during a veritable interview marathon. He had previously swapped jerseys with Sommer. “Primarily Yann was a bit annoyed about it, but after the game we joked about it. We’ll probably talk about it again over lunch,” flattened Widmer, who will see Sommer again next week with the national team.

For more than a 1-1 draw, “maybe we didn’t have enough time,” summed up the Mainz top transfer, “and a little bit of coolness. However, Borussia’s keeper was once again outstanding. In any case, Widmer’s conclusion is positive: “We were better than Gladbach at times, which is not a matter of course. “
