Weinzierl and FCA fight against the away curse

With the 4:1 against Stuttgart, FC Augsburg has increased the distance to the direct relegation places, but is still in 16th place. To ease the situation further, FCA would have to improve in Wolfsburg. But Augsburg are chronically unsuccessful away from home.

0:3 in Freiburg, 1:2 in Dortmund, 1:4 in Mainz – FCA have lost all of their last three away games. The last victory away from home was eight months ago, when the coach was still Heiko Herrlich at the 1-0 defeat in Mainz on matchday 23 of pre-season. The Bavarian Swabians are winless in eleven away games (2 draws, 9 defeats). Never before in the history of the Bundesliga have Augsburg had to wait so long for a success on the road.

Markus Weinzierl has even waited 16 away games as a coach for a win in the Bundesliga, the last one he managed around three years ago with VfB (2-0 in Nuremberg on 10 November 2018). However, it will take twice as long for a coach to set a Bundesliga negative record: Friedhelm Funkel, Horst Buhtz and Rudi Gutendorf each remained winless for 32 away games in the interim.

Debacle in 2018/19 season finale

Weinzierl and FCA are fighting against the away curse. The Fuggerstädter have mixed memories of Wolfsburg: With three wins, five draws and only two defeats, the record at VfL is positive overall. Three of the four most recent appearances in Lower Saxony ended 0-0, but the fourth particularly stuck: On matchday 34 of the 2018/19 season, FCA conceded their highest defeat in the Bundesliga with 1:8.

“We know that we can’t let a millimetre go and that a real calibre awaits us next week,” said manager Stefan Reuter after Sunday’s success against Stuttgart. It won’t be any easier for FCA after the international break. Then there will be another home game, but the opponent will be FC Bayern.
