Union Berlin releases Champions League jersey

Just before the start of the Champions League, Union Berlin has presented its Champions League shirt. Will the Eisernen only wear it three times?

Record winner against Champions League newcomer: The clash between Real Madrid and 1. FC Union Berlin on Tuesday evening is already a duel of contrasts – and this is now also visually underlined. While the royals will be dressed in their usual white at the Bernabeu, the Eisernen will be wearing largely black outfits.

On Thursday morning, the Berliners and kit supplier Adidas presented their Champions League jersey. It is based on the T-shirts the players wore to celebrate after the successful qualification against Werder Bremen (1:0) on the final matchday of the last Bundesliga season.

This means that the new kit is also “primarily kept in noble black”, complemented by “golden accents on shoulders and collars”, as the club statement says. All logos and sponsor lettering are also gold-plated. In addition, the motif of the T-shirts – a hand holding a globe – is attached to the bottom hem as a small silicone label.

Union will wear the new European Cup jersey only away

According to Union, the team will only wear the new outfit, which costs €89.95 for adults and €69.95 for children, for European Cup away matches. If it is to be used more than three times, coach Urs Fischer’s team will have to finish at least third in Group C with Real Madrid, Serie A champions SSC Napoli and last year’s Portuguese third-placed Sporting Braga.

The hype ahead of the first Champions League season in the club’s history is huge for the Berliners. One day after the start of sales, all 40,000 season tickets for the three home games, which will take place at the Olympiastadion instead of the Alte Försterei, were sold out. The situation was similar for the guest contingent of 3,840 tickets for the opening match in the Bernabeu.
