Ukraine appeals to Court of Arbitration for Sport

Ukraine has appealed to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the classification of the Nations League match against Switzerland.

This was announced by CAS on Friday. The UEFA Disciplinary Committee had awarded the cancelled match 3-0 to Switzerland after a number of corona cases in the Eastern Europeans’ team. UEFA is convinced that Ukraine was responsible for the cancellation of the match. The Ukrainian association wants the decision to be reversed and the draw to decide.

The retrospective success means that Switzerland has managed to stay in League A of the Nations League, while Ukraine has been relegated to League B. In Germany’s Group 4, the Swiss had lost the match in Kiev 2-1, but by winning 3-0 they now won the direct comparison with the Ukrainians, who were level on points. Spain won the group with 11 points, ahead of Germany (9).

The Nations League match scheduled for 17 November in Lucerne had been cancelled at short notice because three players and a coach had tested positive for Corona on arrival in Switzerland and the entire team had to be quarantined. Already before the previous match against Germany in Leipzig (3:1), players of the Ukrainian team had tested positive.
