Turin wants to buy Brekalo – what are Weghorst’s plans?

The VfL Wolfsburg squad is under special scrutiny due to the mixed season so far and could get a new face in the next transfer periods. Josip Brekalo is unlikely to return.

In the end, the move in the summer was sensible for everyone involved. Josip Brekalo no longer wanted to stay at VfL Wolfsburg, and the Lower Saxons were also anything but satisfied with the development of the Croatian international, who was eventually loaned out to FC Torino for 500,000 euros. A change of air that is obviously good for the 23-year-old. Brekalo has been convincing in Serie A so far.

Brekalo, who came to Turin after the start of the season and at the end of the summer transfer period, has played eleven games in the Italian league so far, scoring three goals and being slowed down only briefly by a calf injury. The club is happy with Brekalo, who in turn is said to feel comfortable, and there is not much standing in the way of a permanent transfer.

Eleven million euros beckon

The FC can secure the services of the Croatian with an option to buy and, according to reports, intends to do so. Eleven million euros would then flow to VfL Wolfsburg, the player is still under contract with the Lower Saxons until 2023. However, a return to VfL is extremely unlikely.

Other players also have little future in the Autostadt. The contracts of Daniel Ginczek, Admir Mehmedi, Marvin Stefaniak and William (currently out with a serious knee injury) are expiring and will not be renewed. However, in the case of John Anthony Brooks, for whom the club has signalled its willingness to extend his contract in principle, a lot would have to come together for it to continue beyond the summer. The US-American, who would have to accept an enormous drop in salary, has currently lost his regular place in the squad.

Weghorst to Newcastle?

And what about purchases at the struggling VW club in January? “At the moment, that’s not a consideration,” says sporting director Marcel Schäfer. That could change, of course, if the sporting situation worsens or something happens on the departure side. For example, if Wout Weghorst, who has just changed his consultant agency, receives an offer in the next few weeks. This is not the first time there have been rumours of interest from Newcastle United. A VfL future for the Dutchman (contract until 2023) beyond the summer is also unlikely.
