As Thomas Tuchel had rightly said from the start, FC Bayern’s squad is thin. Already, the first symptoms are showing. But the head coach, it seems, has the right medication for it. And that could possibly have a positive effect on the course of the season.
These are exciting weeks for FC Bayern. Also because of the squad composition. Of course, the German record champions have a great squad in terms of quality on paper – what is questionable is the width. But no one at FC Bayern, not even coach Thomas Tuchel, is making excuses. Nobody can change the situation anyway. Therefore, as CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen rightly said, it is important to be flexible. The head coach has no other choice anyway. And his ideas are working.
The defence? Completely thinned out, non-existent in the cup match in Münster (0:4) – although just about tolerable. The attack? In energy-saving mode, at least in Münster. In Mathys Tel, coach Tuchel has a mega-talent for whom he has the right instinct to develop him bit by bit. In two or three years, according to the hopes and speculations at Säbener Straße, the young Frenchman will take over from Harry Kane. Those responsible are convinced that Tel has what it takes.
Successful Experiments
Furthermore, coach Tuchel has called up Leon Goretzka as a centre-back, who has done well – or Matthijs de Ligt as a defensive six before. On the one hand, these are experiments, on the other hand, they are proof that the FCB coach and his players are willing to go unusual ways in times of need. “The players who played in unfamiliar positions did very well and accepted it positively,” praised Tuchel.
It was “a special line-up”, says sports director Christoph Freund with a view to the Münster game, “but the boys did very well, a very serious performance. There was enthusiasm for the game, a very good performance from us under the circumstances.” So, in a way, it is both the grace and the art of flexibility that Tuchel and his team are demonstrating. “I’m very happy with the attitude, the manner and the result,” the head coach was pleased to say after the cup match, “We took on the task the way you have to do it and expected it ourselves. “
Turnaround in Leipzig is the goal
The rotation against Bochum worked, the experiments in Münster also went more than well. “Uli Hoeneß is very happy with how the team is performing right now,” reveals the new sporting director. But now, and they know it in Munich, they are off to Leipzig for the top match. After the last three games against RB, which they did not win, they want to turn things around. If only to avoid having to smooth out old worry lines again – and of course also to maintain the positive trend, the positive mood. Because at the moment, it seems, FC Bayern is on the road to recovery. And could possibly draw many insights from this phase for the further course of this season.
