FC Barcelona have failed with a lawsuit before the commercial court and must fear for the registration of Dani Olmo again. Time is running out.
In terms of sport, things are going rather badly for FC Barcelona around the turn of the year. Two defeats at the end of the season finally eroded their lead in the table. Atletico and Real have already moved past them despite having played fewer games.
Problems are also cropping up off the pitch. As things stand, the Catalans are not allowed to register Dani Olmo, who was signed from RB Leipzig in the summer, for the second half of the season. The Spanish European champion had already got off to a suboptimal start at the Blaugrana because they were initially unable to register him.
It was only the surprising, free transfer of Ilkay Gündogan to Manchester City and the serious injury to Andreas Christensen that opened the door for Dani Olmo. La Liga regulations allowed Barcelona to use a large portion of the salary of a long-term injured player – up to 80 percent – to register another player in Christensen’s case.
Deadline expires on December 31
The injunction against La Liga initiated by Barcelona was not granted on Friday. Another hearing will take place on Monday, December 30. However, the deadline for registering players for the rest of the season is December 31.
According to the club-affiliated newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Dani Olmo had an additional clause written into his contract at the beginning of the season, according to which he could leave the club with immediate effect in the event of a failed registration.
According to Mundo Deportivo, however, loopholes still remain. Behind the scenes, Barcelona is already planning to sell the VIP seating area in the future Camp Nou on a long-term basis in order to generate “extraordinary income”. The talk is of up to €200 million.
In addition, there is the possibility “that one or more members of the board of directors will support the registration of the playmaker with their assets”. Nevertheless, the new year is looking anything but quiet.
