Liverpool FC have apparently backed out of a deal for England’s European Championship player Anthony Gordon. But is that the final word? Newcastle United are under a lot of pressure
When England face Slovakia in the last 16 of the European Championship on Sunday, you really have to hope that Anthony Gordon will firstly get his second start of the tournament and secondly score his first international goal. After his spectacular e-bike crash, in which he suffered several scratches, the 23-year-old has promised to celebrate a goal with training wheels.
Gordon has long been far more adept on the soccer pitch. Last season, the winger was named Newcastle’s player of the year after scoring eleven goals and setting up ten more in 35 Premier League games. Sunday is an important deadline day for Newcastle
Newcastle have until June 30, i.e. this Sunday, to sell players to improve their balance sheet for the current financial year and comply with the league’s financial rules. Otherwise, a points deduction is on the cards, as was the case for several English clubs in the past season. Will Gordon also help his employer in this endeavor?
Liverpool FC have long been considered an interested party. However, English media are now reporting that the Reds have dropped out of the poker game, at least for the time being. Apparently, the Magpies had offered to give up Gordon in return for defender Jarell Quansah moving from Liverpool to Newcastle as part of the deal. However, Jürgen Klopp’s former club are said to have no interest in this.
It cannot be ruled out that there will be further movement in the talks over the weekend, as Liverpool are also aware of the financial pressure from their league rivals, who have been prevented by Financial Fair Play from simply going shopping with the many millions from Saudi Arabia since the change of ownership. One thing is clear: it could be a memorable Sunday for Gordon – who, incidentally, is a Liverpool native.
