European boxing champion Nelvie Tiafack has been voted Sportsman of the Month – as the first boxer since Sven Ottke 18 years ago.
The super heavyweight received 48 per cent of the votes for the month of May, beating triathlete Anne Haug (32 per cent) and para-cyclist Annika Zeyen (20 per cent) into the other places.
The 23-year-old from Bergheim was crowned European champion at the European Championships in Armenia. It was the first European title for the German Boxing Association in five years. Tiafack is the fourth boxer to receive the Sportsman of the Month award. Previously, only Regina Halmich (April 2005), Sven Ottke (March 2004) and Markus Beyer (April 2003), who tragically passed away at the end of 2018, had achieved this.
The Sportsman of the Month is chosen by the 4000 athletes supported by the German Sports Aid Foundation.
