Former Paderborn player Jonas Wirth will continue to play in the Virtual Bundesliga next season. The 18-year-old is moving to VfL Bochum on his mission to defend the title.
It was certainly one of the big questions of this year’s transfer period: where will Jonas Wirth go?
The 18-year-old had surprisingly announced his transfer from SC Paderborn to Fnatic shortly after the end of last season – retroactively to the beginning of June. However, it also seemed clear that a cooperation between the British organization and a club from the Virtual Bundesliga was not unlikely for the upcoming season. After all, the focus of the eSports ecosystem in EA SPORTS FC 24 shifted to national leagues and clubs.
Goal: “Second place in the all-time table”
In fact, Wirth will remain in the Virtual Bundesliga – but not in Paderborn, but at VfL Bochum. In addition, there will be no cooperation with Fnatic. According to team leader Michael Fischer, ‘Jonny’ is “100 percent” Bochum. The German eFootballer of the hour also has a goal in mind: “Of course I want to shoot Bochum to second place in the VBL all-time table,” he announced in an Instagram video. Regardless of that, however, all titles should also go to Castroper Straße.
In all likelihood, ‘Jonny’ will form the Bochum duo for the upcoming VBL season together with Timo Siep. Siep already extended his contract at the end of June and will act as player-coach at VfL in the future.
Meanwhile, in Paderborn, fellow champion Jamie Bartel will be joined by Max ‘Diviners’ Gröne. In an interview with eSport in July, Bartel had still confirmed that he would “like to defend the title” with ‘Jonny’. However, this was quickly off the table. On August 3, the German individual champion and eCL champion announced that he would not be competing for SCP again. Now it is also clear where he will be competing instead.
