The Istanbul derby between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray in the quarter-finals of the Turkish Cup caused a lot of turmoil in the final phase. A double from Victor Osimhen decided the game – and was overshadowed by the next scandal from José Mourinho.
First to the sporting side of things, even if that was quickly pushed into the background in the final phase of this Istanbul derby in the Turkish Cup quarterfinals. Osimhen put the record cup winner ahead in the 10th minute. After a long ball into the box, Yilmaz passed back to his teammate as he fell. Osimhen accepted the ball, took a shot from a semi-right position in the box from around 15 meters out, and hammered the ball powerfully into the near corner.
A quarter of an hour later, the visitors had a great chance to extend their lead from the spot. Ayhan’s shot from inside the six-yard box took a deflection off Kostic’s hand as he tried to block it. After consulting the video assistant referee (VAR) and studying the images, referee Cihan Aydin awarded the hand penalty.
Osimhen took the ball – and had a bit of luck. The 26-year-old opted for the bottom right corner from his point of view, Fenerbahce keeper Egribayat sensed it. He still came up with a hand on the ball, but could not prevent the impact and thus the 0-2 from the perspective of the hosts (27th).
Before half-time, Fenerbahce managed to connect. After a through ball into the box found Talisca, the latter shot first time but Szymanski was first to the ball and pushed it over the line. The flag went up initially for an offside decision, but the goal was awarded after review.
Yellow and red cards galore
In the second half, however, the hosts were no longer able to equalize or even turn the game around. Instead, it became increasingly heated in the final phase. From the 80th to the 85th minute, the referee distributed six yellow cards, then emotions on the sidelines boiled over completely.
The game had to be interrupted after a scuffle broke out between the substitutes. In a large cluster on the sidelines, players and officials from both sides attacked each other. Finally, Yilmaz, who had been substituted shortly before, as well as Galatasaray’s Demirbay and Fenerbahce’s Yandas, who had spent the entire game on the bench, all saw the red card. Fenerbahce assistant coach Salvatore Foti also saw red.
Mourinho pinches Gala coach Buruk by the nose
After 15 minutes of stoppage time, the game was finally over on the pitch, Galatasaray celebrated their place in the semi-finals – and on the sidelines, Fenerbahce coach José Mourinho made his next slip-up. The Portuguese pinched the nose of his opposite number, Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk, rather roughly.
Buruk then fell to the ground, somewhat theatrically, and touched his face. Mourinho was pulled away by a member of his staff before the situation could escalate further. However, there is likely to be consequences for the scandal-prone “Special One”.
