The round of 16 of the Copa del Rey is set: Just like last year, the Copa del Rey will host the Derbi madrileno. Barcelona will face the last remaining third division team
Real Madrid will play half of their next six games (should the Blancos not reach the Supercopa final) against city rivals Atletico. After the Supercopa semi-final on Wednesday and the league game at the beginning of February, the Derbi madrileno will also take place in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey. The two teams already met in the cup last season, with Real winning 3-1 at home in extra time in the quarter-finals. This time, however, the Rojiblancos will be at home on January 18.
Barcelona, on the other hand, were given the supposedly easiest draw: The Catalans travel to the last remaining third division team in the competition, Unionistas Salamanca – 13th in the Primera Federacion – Grupo A had caused a surprise in the round of 16 with a win over Villarreal (7-6 in the final). “We’re delighted to host one of the best teams in the world. In the club’s short history, we’ve already played Real Madrid and now Barcelona. Imagine the joy,” said Hector Nespral, captain of Salamanca. In January 2020, the third-division club upset Real but still lost 3-1.
Second-division side Tenerife, who knocked Las Palmas out of the cup last Sunday (2-0), will host another La Liga club, RCD Mallorca. The other clashes, which will take place from January 16 to 18, will be between first division clubs
