Thiaw in bad luck: Real lose to Milan in endrick debut

AC Milan won the prestigious test match against Real Madrid in Chicago. Real debutant Endrick almost scored his first goal, but a German Milan player hit the crossbar

The spectators at Soldier Field in Chicago could not have been treated to much more footballing greatness: The 15-time Champions League winners met the seven-time winners, with Real Madrid and AC Milan in first and second place in this eternal ranking.

On Thursday night (CEST), however, the runners-up were ahead of the leaders. The Rossoneri could tell that they had already played two test matches (1-1 against Rapid Vienna, 3-2 against Manchester City), while Real at least started their preparations in duels with well-known opponents.

The Whites were still struggling, with regular keeper Courtois having to make two saves after just seven minutes – especially against Chukwueze (4th). The reigning CL winners’ own attack left a lot to be desired, despite the debut of 18-year-old Endrick. The Brazilian center forward at least set up Real’s only noteworthy chance before the break through Brahim Diaz (36′).

Pulisic saves the win

After that, Endrick was already off, as was Courtois. His replacement Lunin was then beaten by Chukwueze in the near corner ten minutes after the restart (55′). The lead was well deserved, as Milan were already more experienced and the better team – the lead could even have been extended, but former Schalke player Thiaw headed against the crossbar from a free-kick (63′).

Madrid almost pulled off another comeback in the final minutes, at least to equalize, but Pulisic made a strong and decisive save from Garcia’s finish (86′). So Milan joined Man City in beating Real, who were still without Vinicius Junior or Rodrygo – and also without Jude Bellingham or Kylian Mbappé, who are not even part of the US tour.

Real are still testing across the Atlantic against FC Barcelona (night of August 4) and Chelsea FC (night of August 7). Milan will also face Barca on the night of August 7
