Tennis teenager Fonseca reaches final in Buenos Aires

Only 18 years old, but already so good: Brazilian João Fonseca is proving in Argentina why many experts see him as a future Grand Slam tournament winner.

Young star João Fonseca has continued his winning streak at the tournament in Buenos Aires and written a small piece of Brazilian tennis history. The 18-year-old won his semi-final against Serbia’s Laslo Dere 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 6-1 to reach an ATP final as the youngest Brazilian in the history of professional tennis.

In the battle for the title, Fonseca, currently ranked 99th in the world, will face the winner of the second semi-final between Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo and Spain’s Pedro Martinez. Cerundolo defeated the number one seeded German professional Alexander Zverev in three sets in the quarterfinals.

Becker is also impressed by the top talent

Fonseca had already impressed and amazed the tennis world during his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open in Melbourne in January. “In England they would say: A star is born,” said Eurosport expert Boris Becker: “There was so much premature praise, which can also be dangerous. But Fonseca has convinced us all.”
