Tennis star Djokovic parts ways with coach Vajda

The tournament in Dubai was the last time tennis star Novak Djokovic celebrated his season debut. A few days after his quarter-final exit, the former number one of the tennis world now made a far-reaching decision.

Serbian tennis pro Novak Djokovic and his coach Marian Vajda have ended their partnership. The 20-time Grand Slam winner also announced on his website that he and the Slovakian coach had already agreed to part ways at the ATP Finals in Turin in November. In total, the 34-year-old Djokovic and the 56-year-old Vajda worked together for 15 years.

On Monday, Djokovic had lost his position as world number one to Russia’s Daniil Medvedev after 361 weeks. Djokovic lost 4-6, 6-7 (4-7) to Czech Jiri Vesely in the Dubai quarter-finals.

“Marian has been by my side in the most important and memorable moments of my career. Together we have achieved incredible things and I am very grateful for his friendship and commitment over the last 15 years,” Djokovic paid tribute to his former coach. He will continue to be coached by former world class player Goran Ivanisevic, who joined his team in 2019.

Earlier this year, Djokovic had caused a stir when he was not allowed to compete at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Because he refuses a Corona vaccination, he had to leave the country again.
