Staff departure before 2022 season: Williams chief engineer leaves the team

Personnel departure at traditional Formula 1 team Williams: The current chief engineer Adam Carter has left his position, a successor has not yet been determined

The next phase of restructuring at traditional Formula 1 team Williams has begun: The previous chief engineer Adam Carter has left the Grove-based racing team, as the team confirmed in a short press release. It says: “In view of our technical direction and the requirements of the 2022 season and beyond, we have made changes to our technical structure. “

However, the terse statement, in the words of Williams team principal Jost Capito, leaves open who will take over the vacant position of chief engineer: A successor for Carter was not presented.

Carter had joined Williams in 2016 with a wealth of Formula 1 experience, having worked for racing teams including Arrows, McLaren, Jordan and Renault from 1998. At Williams, Carter initially worked as a senior engineer, but was soon given more responsibility and headed up the design department from 2019. It is not known whether Carter will continue to work in Formula 1 in the future.

Since the takeover of Williams by Dorilton Capital in the 2020 season, a number of key positions in the Formula One team have been filled, for example by managing director Jost Capito, who took on the additional role of team principal in mid-2021. He also brought his former colleagues at Volkswagen into his racing team in 2021: Francois-Xavier Demaison as Technical Director and Sven Smeets as Head of Sport.

Jost Capito: Much too nice for Formula 1?

Before chief engineer Carter, the previous chief designer Doug McKiernan had already left the Williams team in 2021. McKiernan has since been replaced by Dave Worner.

Williams had gone without points in the 2020 Formula One season, but scored a total of 23 points in 2021 to move up to P8 in the constructors’ standings – an upward trend after previously finishing P10 in the rankings three times in a row. In 2022, Formula 1 returnees Alexander Albon and Nicholas Latifi will drive for the team after George Russell moved to the Mercedes factory team after three years at Williams.
