Sergio Perez speaks: This is how he wants it to continue

Sergio Perez has made his first public statement since losing his Formula 1 cockpit: the Mexican is in no rush to plan his future

In mid-December 2024, Sergio Perez lost his Formula 1 cockpit at Red Bull. Now, for the first time, the Mexican has publicly commented on his future. At the “Feria de Leon” event in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, Perez explained that he is in no rush to plan his future and will only decide after a break whether he will return to Formula 1.

“In the next six months, I will decide how to proceed with my career,” says the 33-year-old. “I am completely happy and will return to Formula 1 if that is what makes me happiest.”

Perez plans to use the coming months for private travel and to spend time with his family. “I have traveled the world, but often without really experiencing it. Now I have the opportunity to make up for that,” says the Mexican.

Red Bull parted ways with Perez after a disappointing performance, even though his contract had only been extended until 2026 a few months earlier. In 2025, Liam Lawson will be the new teammate of Max Verstappen, who is now a four-time world champion.

Perez’s poor performance was a major factor in Red Bull losing out to McLaren in the battle for the Constructors’ Championship. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner had nevertheless indicated that Perez could remain active for the team in a different role, but no details have been provided so far.

Despite the inglorious end for the time being, Perez looks back on his career in Formula 1 with pride: “The important thing is that I never gave up. Whenever there were challenges, better things came because I kept going,” he says.

If Perez does not make a Formula One comeback by 2026, his career in the premier class, which began in 2011 with the Sauber team, would end with 281 starts, six wins and three pole positions.
