Schäfer: “Rumors are deliberately brought in from outside”

At RB Leipzig, coach Marco Rose is under pressure again and there are rumors about his future. But these are deliberately brought in from outside, says sports director Marcel Schäfer.

The ambitious club from Saxony has not managed to bring consistency to its own performance in recent weeks after its miserable exit from the Champions League. “We have to get a certain stability into our defensive behavior, both within a game and over certain phases, over weeks. We have to be more active, both with and without the ball. We have to be more consistent, especially in the final third,” Schäfer listed in an interview with Sky before the cup game against Wolfsburg.

“The phase is not easy at the moment, no question about it,“ he admitted, but still backed coach Rose. ‘We are convinced that we will get out of it together.’ No one is satisfied with the current situation, he said, we have to step it up and do some things better.

”The air up there is very thin”

Schäfer is also aware of the high demands surrounding RB, “because the club has developed outstandingly over the years. The air up there is then very, very thin for further development steps, but we want to tackle that.”

The question is, however, whether the backing for Rose will continue beyond the summer, because rumors about suitable successors have already been circulating – most recently, Sebastian Hoeneß of VfB Stuttgart was mentioned.

“The rumors are probably deliberately being spread by outsiders,” Schäfer commented on the question of a coaching change in the summer. ‘We know that we’re not having a good spell, Marco knows it, I know it, the team knows it. We’re determined to turn the situation around, to do it together, and we’re convinced we can.’

But it is also clear that we have to deliver in the form of results by the summer. In addition to the cup, qualifying for the Champions League is of course at the top of the agenda.
