Leroy Sané didn’t go on vacation after the European Championship exit, but went to hospital instead: he underwent surgery at short notice on Monday. However, he will not be out of action for long
Three days after the bitter exit with the German national team at the European Championships, Leroy Sané has undergone surgery. The FC Bayern winger underwent a minimally invasive procedure on his groin in Munich at fairly short notice. This has now also been confirmed by the German record champions. The operation was successful. Sané is expected to recover during his upcoming vacation before starting his summer preparations at FCB at the end of July.
Sané had surprisingly been preferred to Florian Wirtz in right attacking midfield in the European Championship round of 16 against Denmark (2:0) and was allowed to start again in the quarter-final against Spain (1:2 n. V.) after a committed but not always convincing performance. However, after a poor performance, national coach Julian Nagelsmann replaced him at the break on Friday evening in Stuttgart. The game was reportedly the final impetus for the decision to have an operation in order to get the recurring pubic bone problems under control.
These had accompanied Sané in recent months. In the final phase of the season, the 28-year-old was only fit for Bayern’s Champions League games. For a long time, there was therefore a question mark over his participation in the European Championship. Ultimately, he finished the home tournament after three substitute appearances in the group stage with five appearances and no scoring points
New competition from Olise
On Sunday, Sané gained new competition on the right wing at FC Bayern with the signing of Michael Olise (Crystal Palace). However, the 22-year-old left-footer will miss the start of training under new coach Vincent Kompany on July 15, as will Sané, because he is taking part in the Olympic Games with France
