It had been months in the making, but on Thursday Marco Reus’ MLS transfer was finally finalized. Anticipation and curiosity about the adventure in Los Angeles are high
The LA Galaxy announced their prominent new signing on Thursday afternoon Central European Time. “Marco Reus is a world-class player,” Will Kuntz, General Manager of the MLS club, made clear right away. Those responsible see the BVB icon on a par with his renowned predecessors David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Steven Gerrard.
“It makes me proud”, ”The three of them have done an incredible job – in the past – and then they came up trumps again here. That is also my goal. I want to become champion with the club here. “
An announcement from the new signing. LA Galaxy currently lead the Western Conference with 49 points from 26 games. However, a certain Lionel Messi, who Reus may meet on his way to the title, is also pursuing the same plan. “He hasn’t sent a message. I also doubt that one will come,” joked the former international: ”But it’s nice to play against him again in the league.”
Because the move to Los Angeles dragged on for quite a while, there was room for speculation. But Reus makes it clear: “It was clear to me that I definitely didn’t want to stay in the Bundesliga. And to be honest, Europe wasn’t an option for me either, because I want to do something completely different at the end of my career. Something else linguistically, something else for my family. “
“Living here isn’t so bad either ”
Reus also wants to broaden his horizons overseas. “The contact with LA Galaxy came about very, very early on and I really liked it straight away,” admits the 35-year-old: ”Not just the talks, but also the surroundings. Living here isn’t so bad either. You can do so many things and that was a big factor in saying that you can definitely imagine doing it.”
For this reason, Reus made an “early decision”. The curiosity and anticipation for the MLS are great. “In the Bundesliga you always had the feeling, even when you were playing away, that there were so many spectators supporting you, you simply had your fans everywhere. I don’t know if it’s the same here, but you get to know that. Also soccer in general.”
Reus may have his first home game waiting for him on August 25, when he faces Atlanta United.
