Paris St. Germain strike for the fifth time in the transfer market. In buying Napoli’s Fabian, PSG also beat out Real Madrid, who would have liked to sign the midfielder next summer.
Despite a strong start to the season, Paris St Germain continue to upgrade their midfield. What had been in the offing for several weeks is now official: Fabian is moving from Napoli to the French capital. For the Spanish international, PSG will transfer around 20 million euros to SSC, according to concurring media reports. After the signings of Vitinha (FC Porto) and the ex-Munich player Renato Sanches, the 26-year-old is already the third reinforcement for the central midfield this summer.
Real wanted to sign Fabian on a free transfer
The Parisians also beat Real Madrid to the punch with their purchase. According to reports, the royals wanted to sign Fabian, whose contract in Naples would have expired next year, free of charge in 2023. But the left-footer apparently didn’t want to wait for that and decided against returning to his home country.
Fabian, who signed a contract with PSG until 2027, had been under contract with Napoli since 2018 and was always one of the top performers in his four seasons: Only in his debut season did he play less than 30 Serie A games (27). It was clear that he would leave the club this summer, at least since he was not nominated for the opening game at Hellas Verona. Coach Luciano Spalletti also dispensed with the midfielder’s services in the other games.
Napoli lose next key player
This is the fourth key player the team has lost this summer. Previously, defender Kalidou Koulibaly (Chelsea), record goalscorer in the club’s history Dries Mertens (Galatasaray) and captain Lorenzo Insigne (Toronto) had also left the club. SSC has provided a replacement in attack with the signing of Giacomo Raspadori. The Partenopei have also already found a successor for Fabian: Tottenham’s Tanguy Ndombelé, who had previously spent six months on loan with Olympique Lyon, joined the Serie A club just over a week and a half ago.
Meanwhile, Keylor Navas could go the other way from PSG to Napoli. Since Napoli are not completely satisfied with Alex Meret’s performances, the 35-year-old would probably become the new number one.
