Pulmonary embolism: Ex-Bundesliga pro Luiz Gustavo in hospital

Luiz Gustavo once made a name for himself in the Bundesliga as a midfield sweeper. At 37 years old, he is now playing in Brazil, but has suffered a serious health setback there.

As his club FC Sao Paulo announced, Gustavo complained of chest pains before training. After being examined by the club’s medical department, he was immediately taken to the clinic, where a pulmonary embolism was diagnosed. Since then, the 37-year-old has been in hospital.

Since a severe pulmonary embolism can be life-threatening, Gustavo will need to stay for observation and treatment over the next few days. The midfielder played in the Bundesliga between 2007 and 2017, for clubs including TSG Hoffenheim, FC Bayern Munich and VfL Wolfsburg. In total, the 37-year-old made 245 appearances in the German top flight and scored 15 goals. He played 41 times for his home country Brazil.
