The World Rallycross Championship race at the Nürburgring has to be postponed: On 12 and 13 November, a double-header will now form the season finale of the WRX
The World Rallycross Championship (WRX) will not start at the Nürburgring until November, postponing the Germany race originally scheduled for the last weekend in July. By making this decision, the racing series wants to give the teams the maximum time to prepare for the new electric era of the sport. The Nürburgring will therefore host the WRX season finale on 12-13 November.
With not one but two world championship races, a so-called double-header will be held in the Müllenbachschleife of the Grand Prix circuit. Originally, only one WRC race was planned for the Nürburgring. Tickets for the event remain valid. Advance sales continue unabated for the new date.
“The teams have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to make the switch to electric drive, but the global events of the last few years have caused problems in the supply chain and therefore unforeseen delays in the construction of the cars,” the WRX promoter shared in a statement.
“In order to properly introduce this new generation of rallycross cars, it has therefore been decided to allow the teams an additional two weeks to perfect their preparations,” it adds. The 2022 WRX season is now scheduled to start on 14 August in Hell, Norway.
WRX will switch completely to electric power in the main category this year. The cars will be the most powerful and spectacular ever seen in the championship. They produce 500 kW – the equivalent of 680 hp – and have an instant torque of 880 Nm, resulting in acceleration that surpasses even Formula 1.
“While we are disappointed not to welcome the WRX this month as originally planned, we fully understand and support the reasons for the postponement. We had great racing last year and a title fight that remained exciting right to the end,” explains Nürburgring Managing Director Ingo Böder
“Hopefully, the spectators can look forward to a similarly close decision this season – and who knows, maybe with the new date in November there will be a bit of snow again to increase the excitement,” said Böder, referring to the Eifel weather.
In 2021, the WRX race at the Nürburgring was initially planned for July and then postponed to November – at the time due to the flood disaster in the Ahr valley.
