The Towers won the important north-south duel with Rostock by a wafer-thin margin, Frankfurt gave away a lead in Bamberg, and Chemnitz and Oldenburg celebrated late in the evening.
In the final second, Veolia Towers Hamburg defeated the Rostock Seawolves in the North German derby of the German Basketball League. Shortly before the final siren, Brae Ivey scored to give her team a narrow 78:77 (34:41) victory in this game between two play-in candidates. The Hamburg team thus drew level with the Mecklenburgers in the table. However, the Seawolves have the upper hand in the direct comparison: they won the first leg 92:78.
Both teams initially found it difficult to score points. Nevertheless, the Seawolves took a 7:1 lead after about three and a half minutes. The Towers then settled down and took a 19:13 lead into the final period.
Hamburg continued to dominate at the start of the second quarter, but then lost their way. Rostock capitalized on the home side’s weak spell, even without its playmaker JeQuan Lewis, to retake the lead at half-time.
The fans of both clubs saw a varied encounter that remained competitive until the end, even after the break. Rostock looked like the winner after Bryce Hamilton scored two free throws with seven seconds left on the clock. But then Ivey scored.
