Will La Liga have a new record-breaking player next season? The stage was set for that on Wednesday
Joaquin still hasn’t had enough: as his club Real Betis announced on Wednesday, the midfielder has extended his contract for another season until June 2023. He will thus enter his 20th season in Spain’s top division. Betis hailed the club icon as a “living legend” in the statement.
At the start of the new season, Joaquin, who celebrates his birthday in mid-July, will be 41 years old – and tackling a record. With 600 league games so far (78 goals), he is second in the ranking of record players in La Liga. Only goalkeeper icon Andoni Zubizarreta, who played a total of 622 games between 1981 and 1998, is ahead of him.
Joaquin could pass Zubizarreta in the coming season, but he would have to make more appearances than he did last season. He made 21 appearances for Real Betis – 19 of which he played as a wild card.
