The women’s final is coming up at the US Open. Will the favorite Aryna Sabalenka win – or will Jessica Pegula take the next US triumph in New York?
The women’s tournament at the US Open is about to be decided: Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula will duel for the New York crown on Saturday evening (22:00 CET).
Sabalenka is the favorite going into the final. The 26-year-old is ranked second in the WTA rankings and recently beat local hero Emma Navarro in the semi-finals in two sets (6:3, 7:6).
The two-time Australian Open winner (2023, 2024) had to admit defeat to Coco Gauff in the final last year, but now finally wants the title.
US Open: Pegula wants her first Grand Slam title
However, Pegula – currently number six in the world – will not be an easy opponent. The American defeated Karolina Muchova 1:6, 6:4 and 6:2 in the semi-finals after trailing by a large margin (1:6, 0:2)
The 30-year-old is the daughter of US entrepreneur Terrence Pegula, who owns both the NFL team Buffalo Bills and the NHL team Buffalo Sabre. The 73-year-old recently cheered on his daughter from the stands.
Pegula is still without a Grand Slam title and has never made it past the quarter-finals. Her last appearance was in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon (2023). Now she is aiming to win the title after her compatriot Gauff triumphed last year.
