Nadal: “Relationship with Roger special”

Rafael Nadal is looking forward to the duels between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in the coming years – and raves about Roger Federer.

Rafael Nadal does not believe in comparisons between the new and old rivalries in the world’s top tennis. “They are creating their own history right now,” the 38-year-old said in an interview with the Saudi Arabian organizer on the sidelines of the “Six Kings Slam” show event about his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz and world number one Jannik Sinner.

It is “not the moment to compare these rivalries” because Novak Djokovic is still active while Roger Federer has already ended his career and Nadal himself is about to do so. “It’s a new generation now and we have to let them create their own rivalry,” said Nadal, who will end his great career in November.

“They are doing great, they are very young and achieving fantastic things – winning Grand Slams and Masters,” Nadal said. “Carlos and Jannik are doing special things and I hope they can continue to grow. They will have a great career.”

Nadal talks about early days with Federer

Nadal also spoke about his special relationship with his great rival in the early days of his career. “My relationship with Roger was special,” said the Spaniard, explaining how the two were able to build a friendship despite all the competition.

“It depends on how you approach the sport. There are many other important things in life besides tennis. And if you have a good relationship with your colleagues, you are undoubtedly happier,” said Nadal.

Nadal also had warm words for his second great rival, Grand Slam record winner Novak Djokovic. “He was a great opponent who always pushed me to the highest level,” he said of the Serb.

Nadal announces retirement after Davis Cup

About a week ago, Nadal had announced in a moving video that he would end his career in November.

The Davis Cup final round in Malaga will be the last tournament of the 22-time Grand Slam winner. Lately, the 38-year-old had repeatedly struggled with serious injuries.
