Australia secure their place in the Davis Cup semi-finals. The clash of the titans includes match point drama.
Australia have beaten the Davis Cup heavyweights to reach the semi-finals of the long-standing team competition. The 28-time title holder defeated the record champion USA (32) 2-1 on Thursday after winning the doubles match.
Matthew Ebden/Jordan Thompson made the success perfect with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Tommy Paul/Ben Shelton.
Kokkinakis needs seven match points
Australia, which will play against Italy or Argentina for a place in the final, took the lead somewhat surprisingly. Thanasi Kokkinakis fought a thrilling duel with the higher-rated Ben Shelton, which had the spectators on the edge of their seats in the tie-break of the third set.
It took Kokkinakis’ seventh match point to beat the 2023 US Open semi-finalist 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (16-14).
Taylor Fritz then once again proved his strong form and went on to beat Australia’s top player Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4. However, it was not enough for the USA.
