Tatjana Maria’s first tournament since her sensational run to the Wimbledon semi-finals is already over.
The 34-year-old from Bad Saulgau lost 2-6, 5-7 to China’s Xiyu Wang in the first round of the WTA tournament in Washington, ending the hard-court event, which serves as preparation for the US Open, in disappointment for Maria, a mother of two. On the grass at Wimbledon, she had surprisingly reached the round of the best four, where she was defeated by Ons Jabeur from Tunisia.
After that, Maria did not play in the clay court tournament in Lausanne in July, contrary to her plans. The first-round match against Leolia Jeanjean had been rated in the Frenchwoman’s favour without a fight.
