Marcelo will say goodbye to Real Madrid on Monday

An era is coming to an end at Real Madrid this summer: Marcelo, for many years one of the most spectacular left-backs in the world, will be officially bid farewell.

Lately, Marcelo had expressed the wish to extend his contract at Real Madrid for another year, which expires in the summer. The Royal side have apparently not agreed to this request, as the club announced on Sunday that the 34-year-old will be given a farewell on Monday. Afterwards, he takes questions from journalists.

This marks the end of the next era at Real. Marcelo moved to Madrid from Fluminense in January 2007. In Spain, the left-back, who is known for his offensive and also spectacular style of play, should really feel at home. He played a total of 500 games for the Blancos and scored 35 goals.

The Brazilian’s trophy cabinet has also filled up over the years. Marcelo won the Spanish championship six times, the Champions League five times, the cup twice, the Club World Cup four times, the UEFA Super Cup three times and the Spanish Super Cup five times with Real Madrid.

Highlight at the end for Marcelo

Most recently, Marcelo was no longer a mainstay at Real, with Ferland Mendy outpacing him on the left. As a farewell, the 34-year-old experienced another highlight, winning the Champions League in Paris with the royals and then being allowed to lift the trophy to the sky as captain.
