Lions now with more bite? Braunschweig loan out Union’s Jaeckel

Eintracht Braunschweig have conceded a whopping 17 goals in their first four competitive matches. With the loan of Paul Jaeckel, a central defender with Bundesliga experience should help to close the barn door

Paul Jaeckel has joined Lower Saxony on a one-year loan from Bundesliga side Union Berlin. The parties did not agree a purchase option for the 26-year-old defensive player.

Only a supplementary player at Union

The Eisenhüttenstadt native was trained at youth level at Energie Cottbus and then at VfL Wolfsburg. Jaeckel moved to SpVgg Greuther Fürth for the 2018/2019 season and made 67 second division appearances for the Franconians in three seasons. In 2021, he ventured into the Bundesliga with Union Berlin. He made 49 Bundesliga appearances for the Köpenickers, but his playing time declined sharply, especially in the past season, and the central defender mutated into a supplementary player.

With Jaeckel, who gained international experience with the Berliners with appearances in the Champions League and Europa League as well as in the Conference League, Eintracht hopes to have signed an important building block to close the shooting gallery with 13 goals conceded in the league and four in the cup (1:4 against Frankfurt).

“We have always emphasized in recent weeks that we need and will bring in another central defender. Paul is the perfect fit, who will significantly strengthen us in sporting terms and also has leadership qualities,” said Benjamin Kessel on the Braunschweig website. “He has a lot of experience in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga and has completed the entire pre-season preparation at Union. He is in top shape and ready to go for us immediately,” continued sporting director Benjamin Kessel.

Jaeckel, who can look back on ten games as a German international in the U18 to U21 age groups, is full of anticipation and “aware of the task that lies ahead of us. We haven’t started the season well, but I’m very confident that together we will achieve our goal of staying in the league.”

Jaeckel has been given the number 3

by the Lions.
