It promised to be an exciting final in the LEC. But in the end, G2 Esports was able to clearly win the duel against Rogue.
G2 Esports has been crowned champion of the European League of Legends League LEC for the ninth time. In front of a live audience, the Berlin-based team swept co-favourites Rogue 3-0 in a one-sided series.
G2 dominant against Rogue
Both teams started the final aggressively. Skirmishes took place all over the pitch, with G2 winning most of them. The team slowly built an advantage and carried the momentum over the finish line to claim their first win in the best-of-five series.
Game two was also dominated by G2. Rogue was more active, but again had to admit defeat to G2’s pressure. The third game was the first match point for G2. Rogue needed a miracle to turn the game around.
They wanted to conjure this up again, as they did in their sensational comeback in the semi-finals, and showed a lot of fighting spirit. The team surprised their opponents and were rewarded with an early lead. However, G2 did not let this unsettle them and once again found a way back into the game.
Although Rogue still delayed G2’s victory, in the end the multiple champions were also able to win Game 3 and thus clearly decide the series in their favour.
“It’s an indescribable feeling to win,” G2’s top laner Sergen ‘BrokenBlade’ Celik said happily after the final. “The fans make it ten times better. It just feels right,” said the German player, who only joined G2 this season.
Champion exceeds all expectations
After a disastrous season in 2021 and a missed qualification to the World Cup, G2 had replaced three out of five players in 2022 and relied on younger, more inexperienced eSportsmen. Nevertheless, success initially seemed in jeopardy after the semi-final defeat to Fnatic. After that, however, the eventual LEC champion did not lose a single round and made four “sweeps”.
Apart from the G2 veterans Rasmus ‘caPs’ Winther and Marcin ‘Jankos’ Jankowski, it is the first title for the newly formed team – also for the young Celik. By winning the title, the team exceeds expectations for many.
G2 has thus also qualified for the international tournament Mid-Season Invitational in South Korea. There, the team will meet the winners of all regional leagues, including the Korean champion T1 around LoL legend Sang-hyeok ‘Faker’ Lee.
