Korpatsch in round two at the Australian Open

Good start for the German tennis pros in Melbourne. Tamara Korpatsch is through to round two at the Australian Open. Things didn’t look good for the Hamburg native at first

Tamara Korpatsch has become the first German tennis player to reach the second round at the Australian Open. The 28-year-old from Hamburg beat the Brit Jodie Burrage 2:6, 6:3, 6:0 in Melbourne. Korpatsch converted her second match point after 1:51 hours.

Korpatsch, number 81 in the world, got off to a poor start on Court 13 in Melbourne Park and conceded the first set after just 28 minutes. However, the North German then improved and made far fewer easy mistakes. After 1:20 hours, she equalized the set and broke the resistance of the 24-year-old Briton.

Korpatsch managed a quick break in the third set and was unstoppable from then on. The Hamburg native has now reached the second round in Melbourne for the first time. She will now face the Czech number nine seed Barbora Krejcikova.

Ella Seidel will be the second German to take part in the action on Sunday. The 18-year-old qualifier from Hamburg will face defending champion Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus in the second match of the night session in the Rod Laver Arena.

In the men’s singles, co-favorite Jannik Sinner advanced to the second round without any major problems. The world number four from Italy beat Botic van de Zandschulp from the Netherlands 6:4, 7:5, 6:3.
