Kristaps Porzingis hasn’t played a game for the Boston Celtics since the end of April, missing most of the playoffs due to injury. Now he is about to make a comeback in the NBA Finals – against his former team of all teams
In Game 4 of the Boston Celtics’ first-round series against the Miami Heat, Kristaps Porzingis suffered a calf strain just over five weeks ago. Since then, the big man has been condemned to watch, but the Celtics still made it to the NBA Finals, which begin on Friday night, with relative ease. They may be able to call on Porzingis again there.
“That’s the plan”, the 28-year-old confirmed – but added a small caveat. Depending on how his calf reacts to the increased strain, it might not be enough for Game 1 after all. “There are still a few days to go, so that could make a difference. Every day gives me more time to get fitter.”
Last Friday, the Latvian took part in parts of the team training session again, and a full training session was on the agenda on Saturday. But is he really at 100 percent? “Good question,” Porzingis replied to a reporter’s question. “I don’t know. I’ve worked hard up to this point to get back in shape. We’ll see.” When asked if he could run without pain, he thought for a moment – but then said: “Yes. “

Porzingis’ potential return would be an additional boost for the Celtics. In the regular season, he averaged 20.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and just under two blocks per game in 57 appearances. With his reliable long-range shooting (37.5 per cent threes in the regular season), the 6-foot-8 big man can also spread the court in offense
The fact that Porzingis is now facing his former employer in the finals is “great”, he says. From 2019 until his trade to the Washington Wizards in February 2022, he played alongside Luka Doncic for the Mavs. However, Dallas didn’t make it past the first playoff round back then. He has now been playing in Boston since last summer.
“I played two and a half years [in Dallas] and I’m happy for everyone there,” said Porzingis. “I have a lot of great relationships with Dallas – they deserve the success they’ve had this season.” He is looking forward to the upcoming duel with many of his former teammates. “It will be fun to play against my old team and come back to Dallas. “
