“I’ve had enough!”: Brazil legend Ronaldinho rants

As a world champion in 2002, Ronaldinho has experienced the sunny side of Brazilian soccer at first hand – and sees cause for concern in the current team. Even more: the once brilliant player breaks down the current selection

The two preparation matches for the upcoming Copa America (June 20 to July 14) were rather straightforward. The Brazilian national team coached by Dorival Silvestre Junior – in office since January following the dismissal of Real coach Carlo Ancelotti – had initially won 3-2 against Mexico after losing 2-0 just deep into stoppage time, before a 1-1 draw against the USA followed.

In short, the performances on the way to their tenth Copa title (last in 2019) have not yet sparked any euphoria.

Especially not for former international Ronaldinho. The 97-time international and 33-time goalscorer once belonged to a golden generation between 1999 and his retirement in 2013 – crowned with the 2002 World Cup title in South Korea/Japan (2:0 against Germany).

“A disgrace “

Now the dribbling artist, who was celebrated for his finesse and exceptional ball handling during his playing days, spoke out in an Instagram video – and criticized the current selection of his home country with brash criticism. “I’ve had enough! It’s a sad moment for everyone who loves Brazilian soccer,” declared the now 44-year-old. “It’s one of the worst teams in recent years.” He sees “no leaders” and recognizes “mostly only average players” on the pitch.

The former PSG, Barcelona and Milan professional has “never experienced a situation as bad as this” and lamented the “lack of love for the Brazilian shirt and poor soccer” from the current protagonists.

That is why, according to the former member of the celebrated “Joga Bonito” movement, he will “not watch a Brazil game or celebrate a victory” at the continental championship being held in the United States. His decisive point for these harsh tones: the recent 1:1 in the test against the upcoming host USA. In Ronaldinho’s view, Brazil’s performance during that match without leading player Neymar (32), who is now under contract with Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, is back in training after tearing his cruciate ligament and will miss the Copa, was “one of the worst I’ve ever seen”. It’s a disgrace. “
