Even seven years after the end of her career, Ana Ivanovic still gets excited when tennis is on TV. “To be honest, I’m still playing along,” said the former world number one in an interview with sportschau.de: “I often think, what would I do now, sometimes I wish I was out there now.”
She said she “always loved the Australian Open, which starts on Sunday in Melbourne, as a player, so I miss tennis even more now”. She is looking forward to the night sessions at the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, which she wants to enjoy on the other side of the world in front of the TV “for breakfast”. Ivanovic reached the final in Australia in 2008, the same year she won her only major title at the French Open in Paris.
She has never thought about a life as a tennis mother like Angelique Kerber, Naomi Osaka or Caroline Wozniacki. “For me, it’s important to be at home with the children for the first few years. Being on tour every week, constantly traveling with children, that wouldn’t have been for me,” said Ivanovic. The 36-year-old has been married to ex-footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger since 2016 and the couple have three sons together.
