Italy’s tennis star Sinner cancels Olympic start

An illness has put a spanner in the works for tennis star Jannik Sinner. Alexander Zverev now has one less gold rival in Paris. And another top player also has to cancel

Italy’s tennis star Jannik Sinner has canceled his participation in the Olympic Games in Paris due to illness. He is suffering from tonsillitis and is “not feeling well”, as the Australian Open winner announced on Instagram. The doctor had urgently advised him not to take part in the Olympic tennis tournament from July 27 to August 4. A few hours later, another top player canceled his start in Paris due to injury. The Dane Holger Rune announced that he would not be able to compete.

“I have played with pain in my wrist throughout the clay court and grass court season,” he wrote on Instagram. “That’s why I now have to take the medical recommendations seriously. I will be watching the Olympics from home.”

Sinner wrote that the cancellation was “a big disappointment” because it had been one of his main goals of the season. “I was looking forward to representing my country at this important event,” wrote the world number one.

Sinner was one of the main rivals for Tokyo Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, who is the co-favorite at the Stade Roland Garros. He will now “support the Italian athletes from home”, said Sinner. The 22-year-old was also entered for the doubles competition with Lorenzo Musetti and was also seeded number one there.
