Interest in Davies: Will Real land “the next Kroos”?

Real Madrid are said to have greater interest in Bayern’s Alphonso Davies (22) – and in all likelihood good cards at the negotiating table.

FC Bayern is not a selling club, the German record champion usually decides itself whether a player joins the club – or leaves it again. But exceptions also confirm this rule, especially the case of Toni Kroos was regretted at Säbener Straße for years to come.

A year before the end of his contract, which he had not wanted to extend in Munich, the Royal League snatched up the strategist after the 2014 World Cup for a reported 25 million euros. Especially in retrospect, that was a bargain.

Ten years later, according to “Marca”, the Royals are planning to do the same thing again, now for left-back Alphonso Davies. The quick-as-an-arrow Canadian is still under contract with FCB until 2025, which – unlike the club – he does not yet want to extend. Real have apparently taken notice.

If Davies were not to extend, the Madrilenians could get him relatively cheaply next summer, also with only one year left on his contract. And Bayern could have to grudgingly accept that – a “next Kroos” (Marca) – once again, because they don’t like to give away players they don’t want to give away – but they like even less to give away players for whom they get nothing in return.

The competition would be manageable for Davies

At Real, brilliant in midfield, the full-back positions have been a weak spot for years. On the right, Dani Carvajal’s fitness and form are often too variable, and on the left, Ferland Mendy has never been able to replace Marcelo equally – newcomer Fran Garcia has not made a good impression there either. The fundamental importance and offensive responsibility of the full-backs have increased in Carlo Ancelotti’s new 4-3-1-2 formation.

The relationship between the Spanish and German record champions is considered good, and in recent years there have always been direct club changes: When Kroos went to Madrid, Xabi Alonso came to Munich in return, later Real loaned James Rodriguez or Alvaro Odriozola to the FCB. In 2021, the Blancos got David Alaba for free – something the Munich team would probably want to avoid in the case of Davies.
