Homophobic chant: Tottenham denounces “abominable” fan behavior

When their team beat Manchester United 3-0, Tottenham Hotspur fans started a homophobic chant. The club was shocked by this, and issued a statement announcing sanctions.

Tottenham should have been in high spirits after beating Manchester United 3-0. But just a few hours after the final whistle, the Premier League club was forced to issue a statement on its own channels that was anything but gratifying. “The club is aware of the abhorrent homophobic chants that were sung today by some of our away fans at Old Trafford,” the Spurs wrote in the statement released on Sunday evening.

Apparently, it was about a chant that the fans started in the away section after the 3-0 final score. The lyrics are about Spurs center forward Dominic Solanke, who had previously scored the goal, and Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta. The club condemned the chant as “unacceptable, extremely offensive and not a way to show support for the team”.

Spurs announce “strongest possible action”

The club now wants to work closely with the police and stewards to identify the supporters who started or joined in with the chants. “We will take the strongest possible action under our sanctions and ban policy,” they said.

Fans who can help should contact the club.

Together with the LGBTQ+ fan representation, the club wants to “create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans on match days”. They are proud of the great away support from the traveling fans, but: “We all have a responsibility to act as ambassadors for Tottenham Hotspur. Discrimination of any kind has no place in our club.”
