Hoffenheim homegrown Elmkies is on the rise again

After a lost season in The Hague, TSG homegrown Ilay Elmkies seems to be slowly regaining momentum and form.

The curious career path of Ilay Elmkies was marked by this particular feature: even before the talent made his debut for TSG in the Bundesliga, the Israeli was already a senior international for his country. In May 2020, Elmkies played for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga for the first and so far only time.

After the first preparation under head coach Sebastian Hoeneß, everyone involved had considered a loan as the most sensible next step. But the episode in The Hague proved to be a misstep. Turbulence at the club, as well as a Corona illness and a foot injury, set the midfielder far back.

Playing practice in Austria

Elmkies, who is still tied to TSG until 2023, has since been loaned out to Admira Wacker Mödling in Austria. There, the 21-year-old is gaining playing time again, at least with a few substitute appearances. Recently, however, he has also made an appearance in Germany. Hoffenheim’s loan player played against the German team in Paderborn with Israel’s U21s (2:3). And Elmkies did cause the DFB team a few problems.

The ball-playing technician not only ensured stable ball circulation, but was also instrumental in Israel’s 1:0 lead. Elmkies sent his colleague Doron Leidner on his way with a precise pass into the back of the German defence, and the left-back, who had started at the right time, resolutely completed the fine pass.

That’s why Stiller plays for TSG

Elmkies’ club colleague Luca Philipp in the German goal was beaten. Elmkies also engaged in intense duels in midfield with Angelo Stiller, who switched to Hoffenheim in the summer. In the course of the game, however, it became clear why Stiller and not Elmkies currently plays for TSG. While Stiller constantly kept up the level, Elmkies later visibly declined and also had to be treated for cramps.

Nevertheless, this performance was a bright spot for the Israeli, who is now on the rise again after a regression last season. However, it remains to be seen to which level the development will lead him.
