Golden Shoe: Salah extends his lead – Retegui leaps up

Mohamed Salah remains the undisputed leader of the European scoring charts. Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane have been involuntarily held back – and overtaken.

Mo Salah and Viktor Gyökeres can both point to 27 goals in their league games this season. The Egyptian’s advantage is that he scores these goals in the Premier League and therefore gets two points per goal. Gyökeres’ disadvantage, on the other hand, is that he plays in Portugal – and so his brace in league leaders and champions Sporting’s win at Casa Pia (3-1) only earns him three points (40.5 in total), while Salah gets four points for his penalty double against bottom-of-the-league Southampton (3-1).

The familiar Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane are still in second place with 21 goals and 42 points respectively. However, they are now only in joint third place because Italy’s national striker Mateo Retegui has overtaken them and is now in sole second place. He scored from the penalty spot to make it 1-0 in Atalanta Bergamo’s 4-0 win at Juventus Turin and now has 22 goals (44).

Lewandowski was thwarted for tragic reasons, because FC Barcelona’s home game against CA Osasuna had to be canceled at short notice due to the death of the Blaugrana team doctor. Kane, meanwhile, only came on from the 63rd minute in Bayern’s 3-2 defeat to Bochum and went away empty-handed once again – for the fourth time in a row in the Bundesliga.

Unsuccessful Bundesliga goal scorers

The next best Bundesliga goal scorers are Patrik Schick (13th with 16/32) as well as Tim Kleindienst, Serhou Guirassy and Jonathan Burkardt (tied for 18th with 14/28). The Leverkusen player in the 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen, the Gladbach player in the 3-1 defeat to Mainz 05, the Dortmund player in the 1-0 defeat to Augsburg and the Mainz player in Gladbach all failed to score.

Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitiké (13/26, 27th place) did not join the latter trio because he failed to beat Berlin goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow from the penalty spot in injury time in the 2-1 defeat to Union.
