Yann Sommer has a special personal award to celebrate: On Thursday, the Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper was named Footballer of the Year in his home country.
Killer of penalties for Gladbach and Switzerland
The 33-year-old has earned this award not least because of his strong performances for the currently struggling Gladbach side. He has played the full distance in all 20 Bundesliga matches for them this season and recently attracted attention with two saved penalties in the 1-2 defeat of Bayer Leverkusen.
Sommer also impressed with his Swiss team during last year’s European Championship, reaching the quarter-finals. On the way there, they surprisingly beat the French in a penalty shootout in the round of 16, in which Sommer sealed their progress with a save against superstar Kylian Mbappé.
