After advancing to the final tournament, the German Davis Cup team wants to bid farewell to the home crowd in Hamburg with a group win. To do so, they need a win on Sunday against the Australians, who are also still undefeated after two matches.
“I didn’t realise at the beginning of the week that the draw had already been made. If you win the group, you have a better draw than second,” said captain Michael Kohlmann. The 48-year-old left it open which team the German men’s tennis team would be fielding. Oscar Otte, who recently recovered from knee surgery, may be given a break.
However, the pressure is off because of reaching the Final 8 in Malaga at the end of November. “We can enjoy Sunday now and then want to play well in Malaga,” said doubles specialist Tim Pütz. The 34-year-old is still undefeated in the Davis Cup alongside Kevin Krawietz, and scored the decisive point in the wins against France and Belgium in Hamburg. “There is no secret recipe. It’s not like we smoke the voodoo pipe together and that’s why we win all the time,” said Pütz.
