Frustration instead of revolution: Team of the Week remains a problem child in FIFA 22

The team of the week should be improved in FIFA 22. Niklas ‘NikLugi’ Luginsland is not the only one who is not very convinced of the developments.

Before the season EA Sports announced some changes and improvements to the Team of the Week (TOTW). After the Team of the Year, it can be summed up: A new feature is not enough by far.

The Team of the Week in FIFA is a weekly selection of 23 players who make it into the squad through special performance on the real pitch. The concept behind it, the linking of real football and FIFA, is basically very popular with many Ultimate Team players. At least on paper.

Before the current season, EA Sports announced a major innovation with Featured TOTW. But only four months after the release, the conclusion for the TOTW in FIFA 22 is generally more than sobering.

The many construction sites of the TOTW-Promo

The weaknesses have not only been obvious since this season, but are once again clearly highlighted in the current part. Let’s start with the many leaks around all FUT events.

TOTW is not exempt from this. Will my favourite player make it into the selection? Can a player who plays for a small club at least make a splash in FIFA? The excitement that used to be the lifeblood of TOTW seems to have been lost for good this year.

Niklas ‘NikLugi’ Luginsland, a professional player for 1. FC Heidenheim and recently voted FIFAe Personality of the Year, gave eSport an insight into how the weekly selection is developing from a highlight to an increasingly unimportant event: “Personally, not only from a content creator’s point of view, I think it’s a great pity how TOTW is going this year.”

On the one hand, those very leaks are responsible, but the criticism runs deeper. “Team of the Week has simply become bad because there are too many events anyway,” Luginsland says.

The problem of oversupply does not only affect football. In FIFA, too, the voices in the direction of “less is more” are getting louder. “In itself, the idea behind TOTW is great – but even if there is a big hit, you have almost no chance to draft this player. The probability is almost zero. You can save up as many packs as you want. You’re not going to draft him. ”

Good advice is expensive

Even Featured TOTW simply don’t pull it because it would hit the wrong players who would get that special version. Moreover, they are simply not strong enough. Instead of providing up-and-coming talents with Featured cards, EA Sports would rather distribute these upgrades to “one-dayers”.

They are then significantly improved, but by the time their next stronger version appears, the season is almost over. Or there are other cards that have significantly stronger values than TOTW players could ever get.

The crux is to find a better way: Out of rewards and upgrades for players, and at the same time a fundamentally healthier mix of promos and events. ‘NikLugi’ doesn’t want to be in the developers’ shoes: “It’s difficult, just really difficult.”

So good advice on how to keep TOTW attractive over a longer period of a FIFA season is expensive. Awarding the best players of the past week still has enormous potential and a special appeal. The developers would do well to think about further changes here – because in FIFA 22, too, the TOTW versions are becoming more and more obsolete at the very latest due to the extremely strong TOTY cards.
