From mode to TV: All info on the Supercup Real vs. Frankfurt

2022 a German team could win the UEFA Super Cup for the third time. All information on the clash between Eintracht Frankfurt and Real Madrid.

The UEFA Super Cup is an annual meeting between the reigning Champions and the reigning Europa League winners, this year Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt. The search is on to find the successor to Chelsea FC, who beat Villarreal FC 6-5 on penalties in August 2021.

When and where will the 2022 UEFA Super Cup take place?

This year, the title will be awarded in Finland’s capital Helsinki. Kick-off at the Olympic Stadium there is on Wednesday 10 August at 9pm CEST, which is 10pm local time. Helsinki will be the venue for a European Cup final in the men’s category for the first time. According to UEFA, the stadium capacity for the match is 31,500.

What is the UEFA Super Cup mode?

The game will be played like in every European Cup final: If there is a draw after 90 minutes, there will be two 15-minute periods of extra time and then possibly a penalty shoot-out. This has only happened three times in the history of this competition – and Chelsea have always been involved: Prior to their 2021 triumph, Chelsea lost to FC Bayern in 2013 and Liverpool FC in 2019, both from the spot.

Who will broadcast the UEFA Super Cup 2022 live on TV and stream?

In Germany, streaming provider DAZN has the rights to the UEFA Super Cup and will show the match live. In addition, the match can also be seen on free TV on RTL.

How many times has a German club won the UEFA Super Cup?

There have only been two German triumphs, with FC Bayern prevailing in both 2013 and 2020. All other participants from the Bundesliga – Hamburger SV (1977 and 1983), Werder Bremen (1992) and Borussia Dortmund (1997) – lost, just like FC Bayern in 1975 and 1976. Eintracht Frankfurt is playing for the title for the first time.

Champions or Europa League winners – who has the better Super Cup record?

In the 46 finals so far, the reigning Champions League or European Cup winner has won “only” 26 times. Since 2000, it has met the UEFA Cup or Europa League winner, before that it dueled with the winner of the Cup Winners’ Cup, until 1997 even in a first and second leg. The record winners are AC Milan and FC Barcelona with five titles each, ahead of Liverpool FC and Frankfurt’s opponents Real Madrid (four each).
