A bigger stone has now been dropped in NBA free agency: Paul George will play for the Philadelphia 76ers in the future and is expected to win the title alongside Joel Embiid
Just a few hours after the split with the Los Angeles Clippers was announced, it is now also known which team Paul George will be playing for in the future. According to ESPN, the Philadelphia 76ers have been awarded the contract – and will pay the maximum amount of 212 million dollars for the next four years for the forward.
The 34-year-old will thus return to the Eastern Conference. Alongside MVP Joel Embiid and All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey, George will go on the hunt for titles in future and, at best, dethrone the Boston Celtics next summer.
Erving is also negotiating with
George and his agent Aaron Mintz had previously negotiated successfully in Los Angeles with a Sixers delegation led by owner Josh Harris and string-puller Daryl Morey, Sixers legend Julius Erving was also reportedly present.
There is no doubt that “Philly” will have a powerful trio in the coming season – the dominant big man Embiid and the dynamic playmaker Maxey will now be joined by a first-class wing player with a dangerous shot. George, who has been to the All-Star Game nine times, has averaged 23 points, six rebounds and four and a half assists over the past five seasons in Clippers kit.
What’s more, the Sixers have also agreed to terms with shooting guard Kelly Oubre Jr, experienced guard Eric Gordon and center Andre Drummond in the meantime.
No agreement with the Clippers
The Clippers had also hoped in 2017 that George, who was brought in from the Oklahoma City Thunder, would be enough to win a championship. But despite all the improvements, George failed to hit the big time alongside Kawhi Leonard and, most recently, James Harden. Although the Clippers thanked the departing forward for “the five years he was with us” – during which time George also became the best three-point shooter in the history of the franchise – the two parties failed to reach a common denominator during negotiations in recent months. The player apparently wanted a four-year contract, while the Californians only offered three.
Now the player is hoping to win the first title of his career on the East Coast. Embiid and Maxey certainly wouldn’t mind
