Former Brazil international Robinho (40) has been sentenced to prison in Brazil for participating in a gang rape. The former striker was convicted in Italy
A court in Brazil ordered the 40-year-old to serve his prison sentence on Wednesday. Robinho had been sentenced to nine years in prison for his involvement in the gang rape of a then 23-year-old woman in a Milan nightclub in 2013. The sentence, which was handed down in 2017, became final in 2022.
However, Robinho had previously traveled to his home country of Brazil, which also meant that he did not have to serve his prison sentence in Italy. The Italian judiciary then attempted to have Robinho extradited from Brazil. However, this was rejected. In the end, the Italian authorities applied for Robinho to serve his prison sentence in Brazil. They have now been successful
The former striker, who ended his career in 2020, was considered one of the biggest talents in world soccer in the mid-2000s. He moved to Real Madrid in 2005, then played for Manchester City from 2008 to 2010 and AC Milan from 2010 to 2015. The crime also took place during his time at the Italian top club. The court considered it proven that Robinho raped the victim with four accomplices in a Milan nightclub. Robinho had already been accused of rape during his time at Manchester City in 2009, but was not convicted at the time.
The decision to send Robinho to prison was made on the same day as the turnaround in the case of his former national team colleague Dani Alves. The former full-back had also been sentenced to four and a half years in prison in Spain for rape. On Wednesday, however, he was allowed to leave prison for the time being on bail of one million euros.
